S M A S H I N G P U M P K I N S d i s c o g r a p h y v4.7 Maintained by Dave Asselin (pmack@xero.com) Last Updated: 12/18/99 ------------------------------------------------------------------ INTRODUCTION Welcome to the Smashing Pumpkins discography. This work attempts to be a comprehensive discography of official releases, going far beyond the discographies the band usually provides (the latest being in The Aeroplane Flies High box set booklet). This work will not track bootlegs or grey-area products like interview CDs, and will not make a great effort in tracking compilations unless there is some special relevance (exclusive tracks, different versions, etc.). ------------------------------------------------------------------ HISTORY This update: A lot of corrections were made by three individuals. I have abbreviated their credits as such: JF = Jeroen Fox MB = Matt Bulthuis MM = Magagnini Massimo - finally ran this damn thing through a spell-checker! - modified locations of discography - updated Goldmine magazine URL - updated Values section - added Standards of Inclusion section - added Nothing Ever Changes demo tape - updated the TSP demo tape - updated the Moon demo tape - updated Gish pressings & info (MB) - updated Australian Lull info (MB) - added reissue info on Siamese Dream - added new foreign pressings of Siamese Dream (MB) - modified info on Siamese Dream box set (MM) - added info about the Australian Disarm CD single (MB) - verified the legitimacy of the MCIS 3xLP repressing (MM) - added French BWBW CD single (JF) - corrected UK Zero single ID number (MM) - modified Dutch Tonight Tonight single info (JF) - modified Thirty-Three UK-CD2 release & corrected Walter Donaldson's name (JF) - added/fixed TEITBITE remixes (JF) - corrected label info on Ava Adore EU CD (JF) - removed redundant AU release of Ava Adore (thanks to Tim Byron) - moved Adore VCD from promo to regular release (JF) - corrected info about Perfect 7" (thanks eastegg@aol.com) - added both Japanese & gold Gish promo CDs (MB) - corrected Earphoria CD promo tracklist (MM) - added MCIS promo cassette - added 5 Song Snippet Adore promo - added French Adore promo (JF) - added The Everlasting Gaze CD promo - added "1991-1998" CD promo - added Dragon Ash song to 'Samples Used' section - added Stigmata sndtrk & promos to Billy Corgan section - added Rod Stewart tribute to D'arcy section - corrected Catherine releases under D'arcy section (JF) - corrected various misspellings (thanks to many people) - modified Radio CD & Individual Member Projects sections for consistency - changed Toshiba-EMI listings to EMI-Virgin. It is intended for free, online distribution. You are not allowed to modify it, sell it for profit or claim it as your own work (Circus Magazine, you have a call on the white courtesy phone...). If you use information compiled here, give proper credit. Many people have asked me if they can HTMLize this discography for use on their personal web pages. While I don't mind if you do, I ask two things: that you give me credit as current maintainer and that you maintain a link to a site with the text version, as more than likely your HTML version will grow stale over time. ------------------------------------------------------------------ LOCATION This work can be found on a variety of web sites, but the most up-to-date version can be found here: US home site: http://www.xero.com/sp/spdiscog.txt UK mirror site: http://www.smashing-pumpkins.net/discograpy/text/spdiscog.txt In addition, the Smashing Pumpkins Fan Collaborative used this text discography as a launching pad for their own effort. It is database-driven and quite useful: http://www.spfc.org/songs-releases/discog.html For those interested in seeing a majority of the items listed in here, I highly recommend Steve Hemming's visual discography: http://www.smashing-pumpkins.net ------------------------------------------------------------------ VALUES I've elected to remove value estimates for a number of reasons, the least of which is the wildly fluctuating market and the steep differences between buying items in the US vs. the UK. I've also been asked quite often where to get a lot of this stuff. While I can't point you in specific directions, the biggest tip I can give you is to purchase Goldmine Magazine, which is released every 2 weeks. It is a collector's dream. Inside, you will find hundreds of dealers listed, spread out across the world. The magazine is oversized and sells for about $3 a issue. Available at almost any cool indie record store, but I've also seen them a bigger chains like Tower Records and bookstores like Barnes and Noble, Borders, etc. They are also online: http://www.krause.com/records/gm Another tip that I can offer is keep geography in mind when looking for vinyl. Apply common sense: if you want the best price on a record, buy it where it was pressed. That often means calling overseas, but you'll save more than you'll spend on a 10-minute international phone call. The Tristessa 7" might be rare in Italy, but there's plenty of them in the US, most of them in Seattle, WA, home of Sub Pop Records. Another option is online auction sites such as eBay, Yahoo and Amazon.com. While these are great places to find hard-to-find items, bargains are pretty rare. Understand that you will be bidding against people all over the world, and bidding can often exceed the true worth of an item. Sometimes it will be worth it to overpay for a truly scarce item, but that's something for you to determine on your own. With some hard work (and a little luck), you can build a Smashing Pumpkins collection without emptying your bank account. Good luck! ------------------------------------------------------------------ STANDARDS OF INCLUSION After some consideration and consultation with others, I have come up with a list of guidelines that a release must meet for inclusion in the discography. These guidelines will be used to make a distinction between bootleg product or home recordings and legitimate discography items. To be included, an item must: 1) have been offered for sale or given away to the public with the intention of promoting the band; 2) have premeditated artwork; that is, a cover or sleeve designed specifically for the intent of distribution. In the case of acetates or test pressings, they must be precursors to a released (or intended to be released) product. 3) be sold or distributed directly through the band or their established agents, such as record labels or booking managers. By adhering to these guidelines, items like the Trick or Treat bootleg 7" (fails #3) and homemade demo tapes (fails #1 & 2) will be kept out of the discography. ------------------------------------------------------------------ CREDITS Finally, this discography was not created in a vacuum. A lot of people on the mailing list and newsgroup provided information, as well as many, many offline people. Unfortunately, this document is already too big, so there isn't any room to individually thank all the contributors. To them I say: Your input was invaluable, and this work is as much yours as it is mine. Special acknowledgement must be given to the proofreaders and hardcore collectors who keep me from releasing an incomplete discography riddled with errors, both spelling and factual. Format is MM/DD/YY. LABEL: Record label responsible for release. ID#: Record label's stock number. Usually found on the spine. ORIGIN: Country where record was released, which is not necessarily where it can/could be bought. AU = Australia IT = Italy BR = Brazil JP = Japan CA = Canada KO = Korea DE = Germany MX = Mexico EU = European Economic Union SA = South America FR = France SP = Spain GR = Greece UK = United Kingdom HO = Holland US = United States TRACKS: A listing of all songs associated with a release. NOTES: Any special information about the release, how it was sold, information about tracks, guest stars, etc. PRESSING INFO: The numbers in [brackets] correspond with the release and track information. A note about Hut Records. They are the UK subsidiary of Virgin Records. A large portion of Hut releases have two ID numbers. One is for use inside the UK (HUTCDX67), while the other (7243 8 93442 2 6) is for international sales. These will not be treated as separate releases, but will be noted where applicable. ------------------------------------------------------------------ * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * 1: STANDARD RELEASES * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * ===================================================================== Nothing Ever Changes FORMAT____DOR________LABEL_____________ID#______________ORIGIN Cassette ??/??/88 n/a n/a US [1] TRACKS_________________________________RELEASE________________ It Suits Me Well ................... [1] NOTES_________________________________________________________ - This item is being added to the discography only after serious consideration. Despite the fact that it is a home recording, it does meet the standards of inclusion. - This tape features Billy, James and Ron Roesing (ex-Marked drummer) on the first two tracks and Billy, James and a drum machine on the last. - There were allegedly three versions of artwork for this tape created. The single copy known to exist outside the band's archive has a cover featuring a nun with bleeding hands and eyes. Artwork mock-ups for the other two covers are known to exist, but a description of the actual art is unavailable. - The number of these tapes created is unknown, but it is very likely an extremely small number. I would be very surprised if it totaled more than 100 copies across the three cover versions. - There is some confusion over whether the track listed above as "Heart and Cross" is actually two tracks, one called "Heart and one called "Cross". I tend to believe it was Iha, as he was a graphic design student before joining the band. - The tape was produced with different color j-cards. Green, red and pink j-cards have been verified. - There are different "versions" of the handwritten labels. Some were done by Billy himself, while others were done by unknown parties. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] [7] [8] [9] NOTES_________________________________________________________ - Originally released in 1991 by Caroline Records in the US, Hut Records in the UK. In late 1994, the album was slightly remastered and subsequently re-released under the Virgin banner with an accompanying re-release on Hut. This was not highly publicized, and is hardly noticeable. The easiest way to differentiate between the two releases is to check the label on the spine. Other differences include the CD color (original pressing: purple with picture, Remastered: Virgin - purple with no picture, Hut - red), and publishing credits (original: Copyright Control, remastered: Cinderful Music/Cellophane Music). The new LPs have the word "Remastered" under the bar code. - "I Am One" and "Tristessa" were re-recorded for the album. - Vocals on "Daydream" are by D'arcy. - There is a short mystery track after "Daydream", which Billy identified as "I'm Going Crazy" in a 1996 interview. (2/3/96 - KROQ Los Angeles) - The Japanese CD release has a white CD inlay, and an 18 page booklet including full Japanese and English lyrics of all songs on Gish along with 5 pages with Japanese writings (presumably about the band) by Mr. Hiro Arishima, dated 22 July 1991 and 28 April 1994. - There is some confusion on the release order of various pressings of this album. It is known that the initial batch was done in Germany because it was where it could be produced the cheapest (CARCD16/CARLP2). Later they were pressed by Hut (HUTCD/HUTLP/HUTCS), presumably at the time of the UK release. At some point before the release of the remastered version, there was a US pressing of the album (CAROL), but it is unclear when this was produced. - The PO Box listed for the fan club has the wrong box number. It's listed as PO Box 587010 (578602 on the CD), as opposed to box 578010 in SD and PI). This was corrected on the remastered version. Later pressings reduced all these pages into one 4-panel foldout. On November 16, 1999, Virgin reissued Siamese Dream with the original 20-page booklet. This will now be the current pressing. European versions continue to be produced with the 20 page booklet. - There are two versions of the US _Siamese Dream_. The regular version lists all song titles on the back, and the "clean version", manufactured to sell in stores like Wal-Mart, lists no track information, presumably to keep the title "Silverfuck" from corrupting the Youth of America or offending the Blue Hairs. The CD itself is identical on both releases. - The Japanese CD release has a white CD inlay and the 20 page booklet including a Japanese lyric sheet to all songs (with the exception of Pissant). Also contains 4 pages of Japanese writings (presumably about the band) by Mr. Hiro Arishima, dated 15 June 1993. It also has an additional track called "Hikari Express", which is just "Pissant". The CD itself has the Hut UK number (CDHUT11) printed on it. - Different editions of the CD have the talking between Spaceboy and Silverfuck as part of different tracks. Supposedly, the US and Canadian versions have the segment attached to Silverfuck with UK, European and Japanese attached to Spaceboy. This is not a hard and fast rule however, as my US version has the segment on the end of Spaceboy. - The UK 2xLP has a dull coated cover, while the US versions have a glossy coat. - The South American 2LP pressing differs in the following ways: the sleeve is made of cheaper material; the red lettering (such as the band, album name & song titles) is black on this pressing; and the center label misprints "Greek USA", although it is correct on the sleeve. - The Korean cassette has the band name printed in orange, and the four-panel insert includes all lyrics in English. Lyrics misprint "Luna" as "Juna", although it is correct on the outside sleeve and cassette. - The Brazilian pressing is the only 12" version of this record to be pressed on one LP. It does not come with an inner sleeve, nor is the outer sleeve a gatefold. The artwork is a poor reproduction of the original, and the sound quality is lesser than the standard US release. - The Siamese Dream Collector's Edition is a wooden box with brass hinges that contains an autographed CD copy of the album and the 1st pressing booklet. The autographs are merely stamped reproductions. There are also reports of the box commonly being sold without the CD or booklets. The CD is almost identical, with only the stock number changing. The biggest difference is the price: the original Hut CD costs about US $10, the Virgin reissue about US $6. - It seems that this pressing was for much more than the 2000 usually cited for the past few years. In late 1997 the single still sells for far less than other SD color singles that had much larger pressings. There are suggestions that at some point, a written "7" was misread as a "2". This is pure speculation, but it seems to make sense. - The Australian CD has the artwork for both singles. The singles are all pressed on black vinyl from the original acetates, and come in the original sleeves (minus CR's numbering). Some unscrupulous dealers have attempted to sell the box set in 2 variants: - All black pressings except for Rocket, which is peach - All original colored pressings Be advised that these are both fake. Some dealers are so dumb as to have a included a numbered sleeve for Cherub Rock, a sure sign of a deception. Caveat emptor. - The stock number listed on the sticker is 7 24389 27240 6. This is the Virgin stock number for sales outside the UK. - "Purr Snickety" is misspelled "Purr Snikety" on the back of the box. - The Cherub Rock sleeve in this box has a black bar in the lower right-hand corner of the sleeve in place of the numbering found on the colored 7". - The test pressing information is an assumption based on the confirmation of black vinyl test pressings of the Cherub Rock, Today and Disarm singles. The sides of this 7" were labeled "Test A" and "Test B". The copies with the free single had a sticker on the front indicating the inclusion of the 7" and were hand-numbered on the back. This release has the same ID# as the standard US 12" release, although the 7" has an ID# of 1767-7. - All three US formats have different covers. Definition of the cover images are constantly debated. - The UK 12" has identical artwork to its US counterpart, although the printing is much lighter and the inner sleeve is a heavier stock. - "Landslide" is a Fleetwood Mac song, and "Girl Named Sandoz" is an Animals cover. - The Japanese CD release has a 4 page booklet with a Japanese and English lyric sheet to all songs, as well as a translation of Billy's liner notes. The LP re-arranges the song order, adds two songs (one exclusive to this edition) and names the six sides "Dawn", "Tea Time", "Dusk", "Twilight", "Midnight" and "Starlight". - The track "Infinite Sadness" is actually an unused Siamese Dream-era track, and was produced by Butch Vig. - Some copies sold in France were bundled with the Live In Chicago 5-song CD. See the promo section for more details. - The 3LP version of MCIS was originally solicited in February of 1996 as a limited-to-5000, numbered edition. When it was finally released in April, it was allegedly limited to 15,000. Since that time, numbers above 18,000 have been confirmed, leaving open the question of how many copies were actually pressed. - In late 1998, the MCIS 3LP was repressed. The new pressing is unnumbered (leaving the number box empty), and the sleeve is made of flimsier material. - The US version of the CD has two booklets (one with pictures, one with lyrics) with a total of 30 pages, the UK CD and 3LP both have a single book with 12 pages. - The Japanese version comes in a white double jewel case with the same two booklets as the US version as well as a Japanese lyric sheet and 4 pages of Japanese writings by Mr. Midori Tsukagoshi, dated September 1995. - The CD version sold in Europe is manufactured in Holland because it allows the price to be kept in line with the US release (approximately US$20). The Night Mare" and organ on "Blank Page"). - "17" is actually the vocal line (played on piano) of an as-yet unreleased song called "Blissed and Gone", which has been played live a handful of times. - The Japanese version of the album adds an extra track (Once in a While) before 17. It also features lyrics in English and Japanese, and writings in Japanese (presumably about Adore) dated 15 April 1998. - The 2xLP version of the album is a mono mix, and splits the album over 3 sides (the 4th side is left blank). It comes in a double gatefold cover, featuring the Adore album artwork in full color, as opposed to black and white on the CD/CS release. - The 2 CD set is the full album with an extra CD containing the Ava Adore & Perfect videos in VCD format. The VCD format can be played on computers and on DVD players. [1] PROMOTIONAL NOTES_____________________________________________ [1] This isn't really a true promo, but due to the many questions I receive about this particular cassette, it is included for reference. This 5-song sampler tape was distributed in several formats. It served as a demo tape for booking purposes, but was also distributed to people associated with the band. There were about 400 cassettes created for this purpose. All copies have handwritten labels of varying completeness: - band name only - band name and copyright information - band name, copyright information, track listing It is known to exist with and without a j-card insert. The j-card is white, with artwork similar to the Moon demo cassette. The inside contains booking information. All versions are from the 1989 Reel Time studio session that produced the Moon demo cassette. - "I Am One" & "Not Worth Asking" are identical to the 7". - "Rhinoceros" is a demo version with a guitar solo. - "Bury Me" is a demo version. - "Daydream" is identical to the Moon version. These versions have surfaced on bootleg CDs, most notably _Pumpkin Seeds_. ===================================================================== Gish FORMAT____DOR_______LABEL______________ID#______________ORIGIN CS 02/05/91 Caroline Records - US [1] CD/LP 05/??/91 Caroline Records CAROL 1705-2 US [2] CD 07/??/91 Virgin Japan VJCP-28068 JP [3] CD gold ??/??/9? [1] PROMOTIONAL NOTES_____________________________________________ [1] "I Am One" is the Gish version. This 7" was a blue one-sided flexidisk given away to promote both the album and the band's first UK show. On the back of the sleeve was the following text: The Smashing Pumpkins have arrived. Their debut LP "Gish" has just been released on Caroline Records, following the Sub Pop single "Tristessa". When the band formed in 1988 in Chicago their first piece of vinyl (an early demo and instant collectors item) was a fledgling version of "I Am One", It is poetic that the same song in its current guise should herald their arrival in the UK. The Smashing Pumpkins will be playing Sept 6th at London Underworld. The Smashing Pumpkins are: Billy Corgan: Guitar and Vocals, James Iha: Guitar D'arcy: Bass, Jimmy Chamberlin: Drums "Gish" Is the Album. "Siva" will be the single. I have been informed that the show mentioned on this release ended up being cancelled. Anyone with experience in this field who wishes to contact me and correct any and all information is welcome to do so. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - CD-R stands for CD-Recordable. These are blank CDs used in the production of CDs, massed-produced or home. There are generally two types: - CD-R masters are the actual copies used for production. There are usually only a handful of these made, and they are always burned on gold CDs. CD-R masters are similar in purpose to acetates for vinyl. - CD-R test pressings are the first copies made from the master. These are used to check the quality of the finished product. The quantity can range from a few dozen to a hundred or so. May be pressed on gold, green or blue CDs. With the cheap availability of CD-ROM burners for the home market, fake copies of CD test pressings will invariably surface. One should be extremely careful when purchasing these. Things to look for: information about the CD to be pressed (stock numbers, labels, etc.) or information about the pressing plant (name, phone numbers, date pressed, etc.). Handwriting on the CD is OK, as test pressings are not silk-screened like CDs intended for distribution. Remember, just like in everything else, if it sounds like too good of a deal, it is. Buy from only reputable dealers or people you trust. While it is a given that every CD will have a master and test pressings, a majority of these never find their way into the collector's market. These are ones that have been confirmed. Some of these are for the CD singles, some of them are for promos.
